Hoy os traemos una sorpresa de nuestra sección URBAN MUSIC que nos hacía mucha ilusión desvelar. El rapero Gwangil Jo 조광일 nos ha concedido una entrevista en la que hemos podido conocerle más y saber cuales son sus nuevos objetivos…

1. We know that before You were a rapper, your passion was the beatbox. How did you start making beatbox?

When I was in grade 5, Hiphop culture such as Breakdancing, Rap, Popping, Beatbox were getting bigger in Korea. I went on school camp one time and two of my friends were performing beatbox. That shocked and inspired me a lot to start beatboxing.

2. How did you decide to move from beatbox to Hip-hop?

Like I said in first question, as hiphop culture was getting bigger in Korea, I started rapping naturally. It was so fun for me to rap in Karaoke and perform in certain places. Even after I graduated the university school and became independent, I didn’t think about being a rapper. But, it was so fun to work on songs all night, sleep and then work again. I think that kind of routine was what made me the way I am. But, I never thought about being a rapper. 

3. What does it mean to you that they consider you one of the fastest rappers?

It is interesting cause I’m not even fastest rapper in Guinness and if they measure the speed of my rap with certain rules, I wouldn’t be fastest either. But, I am kind of proud of myself that they feel in that way after just listening to my songs. Besides that, when they call me “only fastest rapper” instead “fastest rapper”, I feel sorry to them that they feel in that way.

4. What expectations do you have of your future? What do you want to achieve?

I don’t want my future to be like bright and priceless diamonds. I would rather want my future to be like heavy stone that stay in the same place forever. Of course I want a lot of people to listen to my music and be influential enough to help a lot of other people who are having hard time with doing music. My final goal is to get a fair price. I believe that, great musicians deserve the fair price and I hope the musicians who are in the opposite position be more motivated. I don’t know how influential that I am going to be in the future, but, I want to make that happen until the end of my career.

5. We saw that your company is Dippin’ Carls Record, How did they contact you?

When I was 17 in Korean age, I met Brown Tigger in online community. Then I lived with lots of people including Brown Tigger after we became like a crew. When we lived together, the house contract was for 2 years. So, we said “If there are no labels who want to sign with us in 2 years, let’s just make one ourselves”. There were couple labels who called us but, after 2 years, everybody left but me and Brown Tigger. So, we made this label.

6. How do you get along with Brown Tigger? What inspired you to create Grow Back?

It’s kind of tiring to see each other everyday but, we doing our own things very well. And when it’s not about music, we are like brothers who are comfortable and fun to each other. When we made “Grow Back”, I was making couple songs a day as usual and I thought that one of the songs among them that I only wrote verse 1 with would sound really great with Brown Tigger. We lived together at that time, so he finished in an hour and I did rest of them.  I have like hundreds of songs in my laptop but I didn’t think I was ready at that time cause there were all drafts to me.  Brown Tigger was keep convincing me saying I am ready to show it to the world. After few years, we decided to release it.

7. Which famous musicians do you admire?

Like I said in “Grow Back”, I admire Big L. Theres a sad story. When I first listened to Big L, I fell in love with his music and kept listening to his music. Then I was like “why theres no more new songs?”. After the research, I found out that he died long time ago. That was so shocking for me.

8. We saw that you have some collabs with artists like Dynamic Duo, Makmal and so on. Tell us a little bit about what is it like to work with other artists

When other artists have similar color as me, when I need certain types of artists or when other artists need my voices, I would work with them too. But, I actually work with any songs if I like the beat. That boundaries are so personal which makes me kind of picky. But, working with other artists on a track is always new and inspirational for me.

9. What did it mean to you that ‘Acrobat’ was chosen one of the best songs of the year by IZM?

What can I say more. I appreciate that so much. Thats all I can say. Having a best song of the year among other so many songs means that I am not doing something meaningless. And when I heard about that fact, I was feeling glad all day.  I also could look back of my rap career.

10. How was participating in the song ‘Code Clear’?

I felt so proud. The reason why I wanted to participate on this project is the purpose. When everyone have to get motivated in this such hard Corona situation, making a song about overcoming the situation with bunch of influential people and the concept that all the income of the song goes to the donation gave me no reason to hesitate. 

11. What could you tell us about your last work ‘Dark Adaptation’? What makes it different from your other works?

Firstly “Dark Adaptation” in dictionary wise means “when you in the dark place from the bright place, the phenomenon that you start to see things that you used to not see as time goes by”.  My intent of the album was also same. Over the 9 years of my music career, things that I used to think thats unfair actually made me realize that it’s not true when I was thinking in 3rd point of view. In this album, I put everything about my music career so far and rest of other things. I usually write lyrics based on my experiences. But, in this album, My narratives were more explicit than other songs of mine.

12. What inspires you the most when You are writing a song?

Beat is the only inspiration. I don’t go on a trip, drinks, watch movies to be inspired.  I am still digging hundreds of beats everyday.  If I turn on the recording software after keep listening to the beats, that’s the start of my songs. 

13. What song from your last album would you recommend and why?

It might be “Acrobat”. That’s the song made me the way I am now and I still remember the feeling after I made that song. After making that song, I was keep listening to it and smoked half pack of my cigarettes. 

14. How was the experience of doing a version of ‘Memoir’ with the orchestra?

It was so cool to do it. When we played together at first time, all the orchestra players were in their position and emptied the space for me. I thought that would so cool to perform in that space. I performed my stage, and I just felt something from the Orchestra players who were located behind me. Even it’s been while, orchestra version of “Memoir” still looks fresh to me.

15. What does music mean to you?

I wouldn’t say that music healed me when I was in pain and music is the only thing in my life. But, like it was, is and going to be, rapper Gwangil Jo and human Gwangil Jo would be same.  In conclusion, music is my life as long as I don’t quit.

16. We know that the music scene is hard and sometimes you could be under a lot of pressure. Have you ever dealt with performance anxiety?(optional)

I didn’t feel those from rapping but, butterfly effect that is created from the rap. I explained that In the song “Depersonalization”.  In dictionary, Depersonalization meaning “described as feeling disconnected or detached from one’s self. Individuals may report feeling as if they are an outside observer of their own thoughts or body, and often report feeling a loss of control over their thoughts or actions”. You will find out why I feel those things from this song. I think theres no any solutions unless I become such a big hearted person”.

17. What advice would you have for someone wanting to join the music industry?

I am still learning but, my personal advice is to die trying. Even though you die trying people may not know. But, even if it’s small or big, chances are always there for you. So, be ready for any chances.

18. What is one message you would give to your fans?

Whenever I hear this kind of questions, I always want to say that I feel so thankful. Either there is only one or 1000 of my fans, they are so appreciated and priceless people to me. And I also don’t want them to regret for being my fans. 

19. What do you know about Spain? (any typical dish, singers/actors, movies, songs)

It might sounds unexpected. But, I love flamenco music and Ballet. After some researches, I also listen to Hey by Julio iglesias and it was so good. I even listen to Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo cause I love classic vocal too. For the foods, I love Churrus and Shrimp foods. 

20. What do you find interesting about Spain? Would you like to visit Spain?

If there was no Covid, I might already were there for like two times. One of reasons is because I am big fan of FC Barcelona. I would love to see the games in the stadium and I love to see fancy Cathedral and historic sites.

It was such a good interview. Even though our languages are different, I love about the fact that I can communicate with Spanish people. If I have chance, I would love to go to Spain and show my music.

1. Sabemos que antes de ser rapero, tu pasión era el beatbox. ¿Cómo empezaste a hacer beatbox?

Cuando estaba en quinto grado, la cultura hiphop, como el breakdance, el rap, el popping y el beatbox se estaban haciendo más grandes en Corea. Una vez fui a un campamento escolar y dos de mis amigos estaban practicando beatbox. Eso me sorprendió y me inspiró mucho para empezar a hacer beatbox.

2. ¿Cómo decidiste pasar del beatbox al hip-hop? 

Como dije en la primera pregunta, como la cultura del hiphop se estaba haciendo más grande en Corea, empecé a rapear naturalmente. Fue muy divertido para mí rapear en Karaoke y actuar en ciertos lugares. Incluso después de graduarme de la universidad y ser independiente, no pensé en ser rapero. Pero fue muy divertido trabajar en canciones toda la noche, dormir y luego volver a trabajar. Creo que ese tipo de rutina fue lo que me hizo ser como soy. Pero nunca pensé en ser rapero.

3. ¿Qué significa para ti que te consideren uno de los raperos más rápidos? 

Es interesante porque no soy el rapero más rápido en Guinness y si miden la velocidad de mi rap con ciertas reglas, yo tampoco lo sería. Pero estoy orgulloso de mí mismo de que se sientan así después de escuchar mis canciones. Además de eso, cuando me llaman «solo rapero más rápido» en lugar de «rapero más rápido», siento pena de que se sientan de esa manera.

4. ¿Qué expectativas tienes de tu futuro? ¿Qué quieres lograr? 

No quiero que mi futuro sea como diamantes brillantes e invaluables. Preferiría que mi futuro fuera como una piedra pesada que se queda en el mismo lugar para siempre. Por supuesto que quiero que mucha gente escuche mi música y sea lo suficientemente influyente como para ayudar a muchas otras personas que están teniendo dificultades para hacer música. Mi objetivo final es conseguir un precio justo. Creo que los grandes músicos merecen el precio justo y espero que los músicos que están en la posición opuesta estén más motivados. No sé qué tan influyente voy a ser en el futuro, pero quiero que eso suceda hasta el final de mi carrera.

5. Vimos que su empresa es Dippin’ Carls Record, ¿Cómo se pusieron en contacto con usted? 

Cuando tenía 17 años en edad coreana, conocí a Brown Tigger en la comunidad en línea. Luego viví con mucha gente, incluido Brown Tigger, después de que nos convertimos en un equipo. Cuando vivíamos juntos, el contrato de la casa era de 2 años. Así que dijimos: «Si no hay etiquetas que quieran firmar con nosotros en 2 años, hagámoslo nosotros mismos». Hubo un par de sellos que nos llamaron pero, después de 2 años, todos nos fuimos menos yo y Brown Tigger. Así que hicimos este sello.

7. ¿Qué músicos famosos admiras? 

Como dije en «Grow Back», admiro Big L. Ther es una historia triste. Cuando escuché por primera vez Big L, me enamoré de su música y seguí escuchando su música. Entonces pensé «¿por qué ya no hay canciones nuevas?». Después de la investigación, me enteré de que murió hace mucho tiempo. Eso fue tan impactante para mí.

8. Vimos que tienes algunos collabs con artistas como Dynamic Duo, Makmal y así sucesivamente. Cuéntanos un poco sobre cómo es trabajar con otros artistas 

Cuando otros artistas tienen un color similar al mío, cuando necesito ciertos tipos de artistas o cuando otros artistas necesitan mis voces, yo también trabajaría con ellos. Pero, en realidad trabajo con cualquier canción si me gusta el ritmo. Que los límites son tan personales que me hace un poco exigente. Pero trabajar con otros artistas en una pista siempre es nuevo e inspirador para mí.

9. ¿Qué significa para ti que ‘Acrobat’ fue elegida una de las mejores canciones del año por IZM? 

¿Qué puedo decir? Lo aprecio tanto. Eso es todo lo que puedo decir. Tener una mejor canción del año entre tantas otras canciones significa que no estoy haciendo algo sin sentido. Y cuando me enteré de ese hecho, me sentí feliz todo el día. También podía mirar hacia atrás en mi carrera de rap.

10. ¿Cómo fue participar en la canción ‘Code Clear’? 

Me sentí tan orgulloso. La razón por la que quería participar en este proyecto es el propósito. Cuando todo el mundo tiene que motivarse en esta situación tan difícil Corona, haciendo una canción sobre la superación de la situación con un montón de personas influyentes y el concepto de que todos los ingresos de la canción va a la donación me dio ninguna razón para dudar.

11. ¿Qué podrías contarnos sobre tu último trabajo, «Dark Adaptation’? ¿Qué lo hace diferente de tus otros trabajos? 

En primer lugar «adaptación oscura» en diccionario sabio significa «cuando estás en el lugar oscuro desde el lugar brillante, el fenómeno que empiezas a ver las cosas que solías no ver a medida que pasa el tiempo». Mi intención del disco también fue la misma. Durante los 9 años de mi carrera musical, las cosas que solía pensar que eso era injusto en realidad me hicieron darme cuenta de que no es cierto cuando estaba pensando en el tercer punto de vista. En este disco, he puesto todo sobre mi carrera musical hasta ahora y otras cosas. Normalmente escribo letras basadas en mis experiencias. Pero, en este álbum, Mis narrativas fueron más explícitas que otras canciones mías.

12. ¿Qué es lo que más te inspira cuando escribes una canción? 

El ritmo es la única inspiración. No voy de viaje, bebo, veo películas para inspirarme. Todavía estoy cavando cientos de latidos todos los días. Si enciendo el software de grabación después de seguir escuchando los ritmos, ese es el comienzo de mis canciones.

13. ¿Qué canción de tu último disco recomendarías y por qué? 

Podría ser «Acrobat». Esa es la canción que me hizo como soy ahora y todavía recuerdo el sentimiento después de que hice esa canción. Después de hacer esa canción, seguía escuchándola y fumaba media cajetilla de mis cigarrillos.

14. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de hacer una versión de ‘Memoir’ con la orquesta? 

Fue genial hacerlo. Cuando tocamos juntos por primera vez, todos los músicos de la orquesta estaban en su posición y vaciaron el espacio para mí. Pensé que sería genial actuar en ese espacio. Interpreté mi escenario y sentí algo de los músicos de la orquesta que estaban detrás de mí. Incluso desde hace tiempo, la versión de orquesta de «Memoir» aún me parece fresca.

15. ¿Qué significa la música para ti? 

Yo no diría que la música me curó cuando estaba sufriendo y la música es lo único en mi vida. Pero, como era, es y va a ser, el rapero Gwangil Jo y el humano Gwangil Jo serían iguales. En conclusión, la música es mi vida mientras no renuncie.

16. Sabemos que la escena musical es dura y a veces podrías estar bajo mucha presión. ¿Alguna vez has lidiado con la ansiedad por el rendimiento?

Yo no lo sentía antes de rapear pero, sí a partir del efecto mariposa que se crea en el rap. Lo expliqué en la canción «Despersonalization». En el diccionario, Despersonalización significa «se describe como sentirse desconectado o separado de uno mismo. Los individuos pueden reportar sentirse como si fueran un observador externo de sus propios pensamientos o cuerpo, y a menudo reportan una pérdida de control sobre sus pensamientos o acciones». Descubriréis por qué siento esas cosas en esta canción. Creo que no hay ninguna solución a menos que me convierta en una persona de gran corazón».

17. ¿Qué consejo tendrías para alguien que quiere unirse a la industria de la música? 

Todavía estoy aprendiendo, pero mi consejo personal es morir en el intento. Aunque mueras intentando que la gente no lo sepa. Pero, incluso si es pequeño o grande, las posibilidades siempre están ahí para ti. Así que, prepárate para cualquier oportunidad.

18. ¿Cuál es un mensaje que le darías a tus fans? 

Cada vez que escucho este tipo de preguntas, siempre quiero decir que me siento tan agradecido. O solo hay uno o 1000 de mis fans, son personas muy apreciadas e invaluables para mí. Y tampoco quiero que se arrepientan de ser mis fans.

19. ¿Qué sabes de España? (cualquier plato típico, cantantes/ actores, películas, canciones) 

Puede sonar inesperado. Pero me encanta la música flamenca y el Ballet. Después de algunas investigaciones, también escuché  ‘Hey’ de Julio Iglesias y fue muy bueno. Incluso escucho a Jose Carreras y Plácido Domingo porque me encanta el canto clásico también. Para los alimentos, me encanta Churros y Camarones.

20. ¿Qué te parece interesante de España? ¿Te gustaría visitar España? 

Si no hubiera Covid, yo podría ya haber estado allí como dos veces. Una de las razones es que soy un gran fan del FC Barcelona. Me encantaría ver los juegos en el estadio y me encanta ver la catedral de lujo y sitios históricos.

Esperamos verte pronto en España, ¿quieres decir algo a nuestros seguidores? 

Fue una entrevista tan buena. A pesar de que nuestros idiomas son diferentes, me encanta el hecho de que puedo comunicarme con los españoles. Si tuviera la oportunidad, me encantaría ir a España y mostrar mi música.
